A new location for Deaf Spotlight, an arts organization focused on serving and showcasing the DDBDDHH community. This is the next round of Tiny Cultural Spaces, a city collaboration in which students choose the winner of a city-wide RFP competition for a piece of unused city property that will be given to the winner, for free, in perpetuity, by the city. Sawhorse students then design and build small buildings for the property.

The new Deaf Spotlight HQ will settle in the south Beacon Hill neighborhood, and serve as an office space, gallery, performance venue, artist residency studio, and more. Sawhorse students began learning the principles of Universal Design in the fall of 2021 and collaborating with Deaf Spotlight leadership to create an accessible building with long sight lines for folks who communicate with ASL. The resulting design is currently under construction – a pair of gorgeous near-matching buildings with roll-up doors on one side and large sliding glass panels on the other, and a smooth deck planned to connect the two.
